The dollar gained ground against the euro on Monday, but slid versus the yen as investors bet on less risky assets, signalling that credit fears have not disappeared yet. ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet also weighed on the euro saying his comments on policy on Aug. 2, when he used the phrase "strong vigilance", preceded a period of financial market turbulance. This could be a signal that the ECB would not have to tighten policy on Sep. 6. The euro's drop ended three consecutive sessions of gains against the dollar.
The crown extended its decline versus the euro yesterday, falling as low as 27.8 to the single currency.
